Today, 900 million people go to bed starving. Let’s put that into perspective:
- It would take you 28 years, 6 months 20 days 12 hours and 23 minutes to count to 900 million if you counted at one per second.
- 43 time the amount of people living in Australia
- 236 times the amount of people living in Melbourne
- 530,000 times the amount of students at St Kevins in both Primary and Secondary
- 1.8 Million times the amount of students at Huntingtower from K-12
The world food crisis has caused the price of rice to more than triple other basic necessities such as wheat, maize, soybeans. The causes for this include:
- World population growth: (more people require more food!)
- More food for current population: (as the population becomes more prosperous they can afford to each more)
- Declining food stocks (changing weather patterns)
- World Financial crisis
- Biofuel (30% of all corn produced in USA is used in bio fuels. One tank of fuel to power a car can feed over 500 people for a year)
The images witnessed by the few who were fortunate to attend this conference, were confronting to say the least. It was impressed upon us that those who faced hunger every night had little choice and they had tried their very best to get out of poverty, but given the little resources they had they could not.
Those thinking about doing the forty hour famine coming up I urge you to do it. Make a difference. And when those doing it come around I urge to donate generously. Don’t donate because you pity them, donate because you can.
