Jack All 20 - Star Camp
Hey Guys! I've been on Star Camp and because I didn't think bring my camera would be too safe this is the only photo I have. (Ironing is terrible.cause i'm a guy)
Sponsored by Sony, Star Camp is a charity camp hosted at Xavier College with graduate students from 5 independent catholic schools (Genezanno FCJ, Loreto Mandeville Hall, Sacre Cour, Xavier College and of course my school St. Kevins College) volunteering their time to give respite for the carers of physically and mentally handicapped children. These disabilities ranged from Autism to Cerebal Palsy with many children being non-verbal and or wheel-chair bound.
I'll be honest, it wasn't easy. Over the 4 days I became physically wasted. But perhaps most strangely was that I didn't expect was how emotionally challenging it was. The child I was looking after was Autistic, hyperactive and non-verbal.
There are many messages to take away from Star Camp. For everyone who didn't have the chance to attend then this message is perhaps most important.
It's easy to see only the disability in a person. I don't think anyone who volunteered at the camp could come away from that without seeing past their child's disability.
Their disability hinders them to a point where they will not be able to lead normal lives; never hold a job, never go out for dinner and won't be able to go to toilet by themselves.
Jazz liked honey sandwiches, hated sitting still and loved the jumping castle. He loves music, sleeps 7 hours a day and runs more in a day than I do in a month. Yes, you can obviously see that he isn't normal. You can see that he needs help. But in the end he too wants the same things we do.'
Jazz's disability is part of him, but doesn't define him.

My VCE results came back and I was very happy. There was one subject I was particularly happy about. I did Chemistry for VCE this year, it was my worst subject by far. I got 31 average being a solid 30. So I beat half the state. I did no work, no practice exams, no worksheets, no homework and read the book every now and again when I could be bothered. My score was too good. I was just a smart arse during class, asking stupid questions and pretending to be a pro at Chemistry.
7 days before exam 1: "Sir, when's our exam?"
2 days before exam 1: "Do we get a cheat sheet?"
Why is diamond and graphite both got "C" as their chemical name.
What's the charge of silver?
Dowling hands out work sheets.
Me: Yay, more scrap paper.
Dowling: Why don't you study Chemistry?
Me: Because I'm doing teaching and only need an 80.
Dowling: How do you expect to get a good score if you don't know how HNMR works?
Me: I only want a 30.
Dowling: ...
Me: Sir, I noticed on our practice exam renewable forms of energy was not on it. Is it going to come up on the exams?
Dowling: There is a small chance you'll be asked it, but I suggest that you cover it
Me: I'M A BETTING MAN. It won't come up on the exam. (didn't come up on the exam)
Half way through Semester 2: So, ah, what the difference between a redox and galvanic cells.
What does OIL RIG stand for?
There was more but I can't think of it right now.
