TI Groups: Which Teams Will Make the Upper Bracket

by Wednesday, July 29, 2015 0 comments
With day 2 of the group stages finished lets take a look like at the 16 teams how they've gone so far and their chances of getting into the upper bracket. In terms of terminology, a game refers to one match, whilst a set refers to two games that the teams play.

Looking at the standings after day 2, it can be seen that Group B's, teams are a lot closer point wise. It should be noted that not all teams in Group B have played 4 sets.

TL;DR for group A; Secret and LGD will start in the upper bracket. coL, Fnatic, iG and C9 will fight for the last two positions. coL and Fnatic are in the best positions to come out on top.  In this group 10 points is the magic number and 9 borderline.

LGD Gaming 3-1-0: 10 p
Teams to come: Fnatic, NaVi, Secret

With Xiao8 at the helm , LGD has only dropped one game against iG which was not entirely unexpected. They have looked strong and decisive in their group. Fnatic should prove a challenge and could take a game off LGD, but ultimately it is their game against Secret that will decide who will take the top of their group.

Team Secret 3-1-0: 10 p
Teams to come: coL, LGD, MVPP

Secret has looked steady so far, which is what everyone expected of them. The only game they've dropped was against an early game orientated Fnatic. Since then, Secret has cruised along and beaten every other team, notably the veterans iG. Team Secret should top their group.

compLexity Gaming 2-1-1: 7 p
Teams to come: C9, Fnatic, Secret

The American qualifier has surprised many by taking a game off iG to complete their 7 points. The experience of Fly added good depth into their team and although, the road ahead is difficult they have set themselves up to be deciders of their on fate. As long as they take 3 more games in their next 3 sets they should start in the upper bracket at the main event. Their match against C9 will be critical.

Cloud9 1-1-2: 4p
Teams to come: coL, iG, MVPP

C9 is in a small amount of trouble. Dropping a game against NaVi and the entire set against LGD, C9 needs to have an excellent second half. C9, (I feel) needs to win two sets to have a clear lead into the upper bracket. Given their record in high pressure situations, C9 needs to avoid tie breaker matches which is very possible in this group.

Fnatic 0-3-1: 3 p
Teams to come: coL, LGD, NaVi

Fnatic has deceptively low score here. It could have been so much better had they beaten MVP. Out of the four teams Fnatic has the best chance of going into the upper bracket. They have impressively, taken a game off Secret and iG which bodes well for their critical games against coL and NaVi. Winning both these sets is very achievable for Mushi and his team. They have a lot of momentum going into the second half.

Invictus Gaming 0-3-1: 3 p
Teams to come: C9, MVPP, NaVi

iG has not performed to expectations. By dropping games against the inexperienced teams of coL and Fnatic, iG have made their own lives very difficult. Like Fnatic they need to win 2 sets, but need to do so against C9 and/or NaVi. The team do not seem to be in sync and will need to play better in the next few days to make the upper bracket.

TL:DR for Group B. This group is a lot closer, with all teams bar MVPH, having a good chance of making top 4. Further, as half the team play four games and the other half have played three games, it makes analysing the results slightly harder. However, EG and Vici should be through comfortably with EG topping the group.

Evil Geniuses 2-2-0: 8 p
Teams to come-: CDEC, EHOME, Empire

EG has played slightly below par. Losing a game against Newbee and VP has slightly dampened their performance, but EG should stay in their top half. EG performance against Vici showed innovation, flexibility and strong execution. Two of the last three teams are qualifiers and a Empire who are sub-performing, EG should come out on top in group B.

CDEC Gaming 2-0-1: 6 p
Teams to come-: EHOME, EG, Newbee Vici

CDEC's performance has been better than expected. As a wildcard qualifier they won both their sets against MVPH and Empire. The latter is extremely notable. However, the matches which await them in the the next couple of days will be their most difficult, almost universally so. CDEC and EHOME have a long history, with EHOME usually have the better of it. Their match here will be difficult. There's still a long road to the upper bracket for EHOME.

 Virtus.pro 1-2-1: 5p
Teams to come-: EHOME, MVPH, VG

The dark horse of group B. VP has done alright. It is very hard to predict how they will go as against the other top teams as they can very hot and cold. VP absolutely need to beat MVPH in their set. Losing a game will be a disaster. It should be noted, that all three teams are the from the east with little to no history against VP.

Vici Gaming 1-2-1: 5 p
Teams to come-: CDEC, Newbee, VP

Vici, Vici, Vici. Vici hasn't done the best. Inexplicably losing a game  (MVPH)  to an extraordinary piece of play snatching the Aegis critically hurt Vici's chances. The capitulation against against EG in game 2 was an uncharacteristic outdraft showed that they are perhaps not the most settled team in terms of consistency. The good news, is Vici has an relatively easy run with CDEC and Newbee coming. They should still start in the upper bracket come the main event.

Empire 1-1-2: 4 p
Teams to come-: EG, MVPH, Newbee

Empire's performance here should be considered subpar. Against Chinese teams Empire has only won 1 of their 6 games. This does not bode well for their critical game against Newbee. Again, they have to win their set against MVPH for any chance. Newbee is unpredictable and Empire should not be able to beat EG on a normal day. Empire has their work cut out for them.

Newbee 0-3-0: 3 p
Teams to come-: CDEC, MVPH, Empire, VG

Look, I don't even know what's happening here. Newbee manage to take off games against EG, VP and EHOME. This will be surprising to most people. Taking three games off three strong team shows more consistency than flukeiness. Again beating MVPH will do wonders. They have history against CDEC which should help.

EHOME 0-3-0: 3 p
Teams to come-: CDEC, EG, MVPH, VP

Almost an identical scenario to Newbee. The biggest difference is EHOME haven't played EG. At this point EHOME needs to pull wins out of the bag. MVPH and CDEC are their best chance with ROTK needing to fire. EHOME's equation is more difficult compared to Newbee.

Interesting aside, watch Hot_Bid's interview with Black particularly at the end.

At the start, Hot_Bid ask black which of his team members they should watch out for. He said MP.

It was MP who stole both the kill and the aegis from Vici
