You know what I don't get?
(How a lot of my post start with this line of questioning. )
Anyway you know what I don't get? Articles like this.
http://junkee.com/sad-internet-boys-mad-rogue-one-female-lead/75928
First disclaimer, I have no problems with feminism as a whole, but I certainly have problems with how it's often used or portrayed.
So the Star Wars Rogue One trailer was recently released and the main protagonist is female. Star Wars, under the direction of George Lucas had always had a poor showing when it comes to female leads. For example in the entire original trilogy, there's a grand total of four female speaking roles in the whole trilogy. Leia, Mon Motham, Aunt Beru and some random who isn't even named.
This article is deliberately combative and disgustingly so. It cites tweets from twitter of "Sad Internet Boys" who hate the fact that Rogue One will feature yet against another female lead. Obviously, if you're going to look for these kind of tweets on twitter or comments on Youtube you're going to find it.
And YouTube comments, really guys? Are we really writing articles based on youtube comments now? I could find you pro-Nazi comments on My Little Pony videos if you wanted me to. If you want to find someone to disagree on the internet, you're going to.
The article's tone makes it clear that men are dumb and they suck. Why are they hating on female leads! They're so backwards! Instead of writing an article about Disney's decision to choose a female lead and how it might encourage girls to become pilots or how it's going to get girls thinking about space, this website has chosen to write an article criticizing people who criticize female leads.
But Jackson, how is this my fault, I didn't write this article and these people deserve it! Patriarchy!
Absolutely! Patriarchy! But we need to recognize this article and those like it for what they are; click-bait, self serving and self reaffirming.
All this article does is reinforces the problem, further portraying feminist as men haters rather than people striving for equality. This is what I have a problem with. When self-described-feminist like Clem Ford "signal boosts" articles such as this one, she is doing the opposite of what she wants.
The effect of these type of article doesn't further the cause of equality and feminism. All it does is add fuel to arguments of feminism is taking over the world.
