Facebook Memories

So Facebook Memories have been out for a while. For those unititated or don't browse Facebook, Facebook Memories is one of those initiative implemented and forced down the throats of Facebook users. Basically, it goes, "Hey look at this wall post/status/photos uploaded/news story that you read on this same day, x years ago."

Obviously, being Facebook, it wasn't the most thought out feature in the history of features ever. There were stories of mums who had to relive miscarriages, people seeing divorces, funerals and the likes. Which makes sense right? If Facebook is a true representation of our lives, there's going to be hurtful posts as well. I totally understand if you don't want to relive those.

But for the most part, I've found it really cool to look back at all the photos that I've loaded, my poor attempts at humour and those cringe-worthy moments that I've had interacting with my friends. I’ve always been an extremely nostalgic person and always enjoyed looking back at stuff like this. That cheap smile that you get from that old photo you uploaded that got x likes, to the funny status you made which makes you remember how dorky you are now. Without Facebook, those posts will go and be locked away in time.

What Facebook memories isn’t able to do is replicate the context and situation about what you were feeling back then when you made that post and why you made that post. Facebook memories, just can’t replicate that feeling that you have when you finally log off at 2AM in the morning after a massive Facebook session talking about god knows what with someone who you may or may not be friends with now. That type of emotion is in your own mind, with your own memories. Facebook is only able to provide you with the trigger for yourself to remember that kind of emotion. And you remember all the people that used to be in your life and be like, why aren't they in my life anymore. How great/bad is it that they're not?

I’m sure no one can remember what we did this day, last year, two years or 6 years ago. And I’m sure no one cares that much. But every now and again, remembering our past, particularly the good memories; it's a nice feeling. Every now again, maybe take the time to browse Facebook memories, just for kicks.
